An international veterans’ conference in Split on Friday brought together Croatian and Ukrainian officials, representatives of international organizations, and experts in veterans’ care.
The event focused on supporting veterans’ physical and mental health as they reintegrate into society and the workforce. It also reaffirmed strong and unwavering support for Ukraine as it continues to resist Russia’s aggression.
The conference was officially opened by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, while Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko addressed participants via video link.
“The courage, determination, and strength the Ukrainians have demonstrated in resisting such a large power and this type of aggression is incredible. We are impressed every day with what Ukraine has done to strengthen its defenses and capabilities. It has rallied exceptional international solidarity and assistance — and Croatia has played its part, sending 14 packages of military aid,” said Plenković.
Svyrydenko emphasized that Ukraine could benefit from Croatia’s experience in caring for military veterans.
“Russia’s full-scale aggression and invasion of Ukraine have dramatically changed our definition of a war veteran. This is no longer a small, exclusive group but a large part of Ukrainian society. Businesspeople, teachers, farmers, factory workers, and IT specialists who took up arms to defend their country are now civilians again. Many sacrificed their health and are facing serious challenges,” Svyrydenko said.
European Commissioner for Democracy and Demography Dubravka Šuica highlighted that Croatia remains the only EU member state with recent experience of war.
“Croatia’s journey from conflict to peace has taught us invaluable lessons about the complex and challenging process of reintegrating veterans.”
During the conference, Croatia and Ukraine signed a memorandum of cooperation on veterans’ care.
