Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said on Friday he expects fuel prices to fall further after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz remains open.

Speaking to reporters at an event in Čakovec, the prime minister said markets had reacted quickly, with oil prices dropping - a positive signal. However, he added that it remains to be seen whether the ceasefire will hold and whether a permanent peace deal can be reached.

Plenković also reiterated that the government will decide on Monday how to adjust fuel price caps.

“There will be a reduction in the prices of Eurosuper, diesel, agricultural diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas,” he said.

He added that if the Strait of Hormuz remains open and the situation stays stable, oil prices could fall further. This, he said, would benefit the economy, support growth, strengthen security of supply, and ease inflationary pressures.

The prime minister was also asked to comment on reports of an investigation into Croatian Lottery sponsorships of sports federations, two of which are currently under corruption probes. He said that regardless of the outcome, the government will continue to support sport.

Asked about the investigations, Plenković said he strongly supports Croatian sport and that government policy is focused on strengthening support for athletes, coaches, associations, and national teams.

He added that increased investment has already laid the groundwork for improvements across all sports and raised the profile of sport in society.

“As for irregularities, it is up to the competent authorities to investigate. Those responsible should be held accountable, but I am against any generalizations,” he said.
