The Croatian Prime Minister's stay in Davos was the subject of a heated debate in Croatian Parliament on Thursday, as opposition MPs took issue with his questionable characterization of the Homeland War.

Speaking in Parliament during Thursday’s session MOST MP Marin Miletić and independent MP Josip Jurčević called out Prime Minister Andrej Plenković for belittling Croatia abroad and destroying the dignity of the Homeland War. The point of contention was Plenković’s statement in which he said that Croatia was a small country that had faced a “problem” thirty years ago.

“In order to avoid any misunderstanding, this is exactly what the prime minister said (...) ‘We are a small country and we had a problem thirty years ago’. That's what Andrej Plenković said in Davos about the Homeland War. He called it a ‘problem’,” Miletić told the chamber.

For his part Jurčević called for Plenković’s immediate resignation: “It is a scandalous statement from the head of the government and it requires his immediate resignation. He didn't just insult the Homeland War, he denigrated the Homeland War.”

Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković, who is a close colleague of Plenković’s in the HDZ, responded by accusing the two opposition MPs of taking the prime minister’s statement out of context: “Taking the prime minister's statement out of context like this is unfair. It was part of a speech with a wider international dimension. I don't think it's fair, but that's your political right and you're welcome to do so.”
