Lawmakers opened their new session on Wednesday with the traditional question-and-answer period with Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and his cabinet.

The discussion, which began on policy and the economy, quickly turned to ideological tensions over Serbian community events, related protests, and recent Thompson concerts.

The left warned of rising risks of violence, while the right accused the left of attempting to limit free speech. The Prime Minister said he is seeking a middle ground.

SDP leader Siniša Hajdaš Dončić said, “In 2025, we are witnessing things that we never imagined could happen in Croatia. Your model of society has collapsed over the past decade.”

Dragana Jeckov of the Serb minority SDSS party noted that Serbian community events are being postponed or canceled for security reasons, even 27 years after the peaceful reintegration process.

Plenković responded, saying recent incidents were “shameful” but condemned, and emphasized the need to return to normalcy and solve problems collaboratively.

Right-wing MP Marin Miletić of Most called for an official ban on glorifying communism in Croatia, noting that the European Parliament has discussed similar measures.

Damir Bakić of Možemo warned that extremist salutes and chants in public spaces are increasing tensions and called for immediate action.

Plenković stressed that his government is not escalating tensions, and said authorities have responded to incidents appropriately. He added that efforts are underway to deescalate tensions, especially ahead of Vukovar and Škabrnja Remembrance Day.
