Two young women from SOS Children’s Village Croatia—an organization that supports children without parental care—have embarked on a new chapter in their lives. They recently moved into an apartment provided by the City of Zagreb and furnished by the Zagreb Fair.
For Barbara and Stela, both 18, the apartment marks their first step toward independent living.
“The first time I entered the apartment, I was surprised. I really like it, so I hope everything will be great,” said Barbara.
The SOS Children’s Village Croatia Semi-Independent Living Program supports young adults until the age of 23, helping them transition to self-sufficiency.
“They have to maintain the apartment themselves, cook, pay utilities, and handle daily responsibilities. If something goes wrong, we step in to help,” explained Gordana Daniel, director of national program development at SOS Children’s Village Croatia.
“Not all participants choose this option—some live with partners, return to their biological families, or move into student housing.”
Currently, 19 young people are enrolled in the program, and the City of Zagreb has provided three apartments for their use.
“Our partners donated everything—a complete dining room, living room, kitchen, appliances, and bathroom. The three bedrooms are fully furnished, with decor, curtains, bedding, and lamps,” said Renata Suša, director of the Zagreb Fair.
Excited about their new beginning, Barbara and Stela say they can’t wait to invite friends over to their new home.
