The sea tide in Dalmatia reached as high as 95 centimeters last night, which caused flooding of the waterfront in coastal and island towns. The most critical was in Kaštela, where numerous buildings were flooded, according to the Split Maritime Meteorological Center.
South wind to strengthen tomorrow, orange warning for all of Dalmatia
Strong wind gusts last night near Palagruža created waves up to eight meters high, reported the State Hydro meteorological Institute on Marjan.
“We registered a sea tide of 95 centimeters, and water overflowed onto the waterfront at Bačvice and near Zenta in Split last night, said Goran Turčinov, on duty at the Split Maritime Meteorological Center. The south wind gust in the Split area was 130 km/h. According to him, the tide caused the waterfront to flood in several Dalmatian coastal towns and islands, but the water was quickly receding.
After a brief calming of the situation - the Sirocco is strengthening again tomorrow; it will be stormy in places, so an orange warning has been issued for the whole of Dalmatia.
Kaštela: Tidal wave lifted the asphalt, but the waterfront did not collapse
After the unprecedented storm that hit Dalmatia last night, the situation in Kaštela is gradually calming down today. The stormy Sirocco has weakened, and the rain has stopped falling, but meteorologists are already predicting a strengthening of the Sirocco, a new tidal wave and the possibility of another outpouring of the sea for tomorrow, reported Mariola Milardović Perić.
Thanks to the rapid intervention of emergency services, most of the flooded family and catering facilities along the Kaštela waterfront were pumped out during the night and day, and now the damage is being repaired. These are buildings located in the first row by the sea and which were directly exposed to a strong tidal wave, heavy rain and strong southerly winds during last night's storm.
The tidal wave, which reached up to 95 centimeters above normal sea level last night, caused the asphalt on the waterfront to rise in some places, which this morning gave the impression of serious damage. However, according to information from the City of Kaštela, the damage is less than initially thought.
The Mayor of Kaštela confirmed that the waterfront did not collapse into the sea and that, weather permitting, the damaged parts can be repaired within ten days. The strong storm did not only affect Kaštela, but also numerous other coastal towns in Dalmatia. Apartments, houses, catering facilities and boats were flooded, and the material damage is extensive. Despite the scale of the storm, the most important thing is that there were no human casualties.
