Međimurje is a new member of the World Association of Ecoregions. Our northernmost county has successfully completed the certification process for membership in that association, making it the first region in Croatia to achieve this prestigious status. The membership agreement was formally signed in Čakovec.
“Međimurje is the first ecoregion in Croatia, a leader, we are the first in something again, and all as a result of strategic thinking, which involved a lot of effort, work and a lot of initial will and enthusiasm,” said Međimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec.
Posavec stated that Međimurje is also the first Croatian Green Destinations region and a two-time winner of the EDEN - European Destinations of Excellence award.
The gathering was also addressed by Salvatore Basile, director of the International Network of Ecoregions and chairman of the World Alliance of Ecological Regions.
Mladen Jakopović, president of the Croatian Chamber of Agriculture, said that he was extremely pleased that Međimurje was the first ecoregion in Croatia, adding that a large part of quality Croatian organic products end up outside our borders.
“From the point of view of producers, this is extremely good, but on the other hand, our consumers do not consume these high-quality, organic products of ours, but in accordance with the purchasing power of our consumers, this is a somewhat lower level. This is certainly not the case here in Međimurje,” concluded Jakopović.
