The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has uncovered a large-scale VAT fraud scheme spanning Croatia and Italy.
The agency said on its website that coordinated raids in Venice and Zagreb led to the arrest of six suspects in Croatia and seven in Italy.
According to EPPO, the scheme was run by an organised criminal group trading in electronic goods and hygiene products, causing an estimated €78 million in unpaid VAT. This is the first multimillion-euro VAT fraud detected in Croatia by European prosecutors.
The County Court in Zagreb has ordered the freezing of two properties and eight vehicles valued at a total of €650,000.
