INA has completed a six-year, €700 million upgrade of the Rijeka Oil Refinery — the largest single investment in the company’s history.
The modernized facility can now process up to four million tons of crude oil per year, including heavier grades, while delivering significantly higher yields of high-value products from the same amount of crude. Comprehensive inspections and testing are currently underway.
Vedrana Janjić, director of INA’s Rijeka Oil Refinery Upgrade Project, said the modernization will allow the refinery to produce about 30 percent more diesel and other high-value products.
Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar called the project one of the most important energy infrastructure investments in Croatia over the past decade, highlighting its role in strengthening the stability of the oil market and securing the country’s long-term energy supply.
Hungary’s MOL Group, majority owner of INA, said the upgraded refinery significantly enhances energy infrastructure in Croatia and the wider region. Szabo Szabolcs, vice president for Refinery Operations at MOL, described the project as a “step change” for the Croatian oil industry.
“This is likely the largest project in Croatia’s oil industry in terms of scope and budget. The Rijeka refinery is taking a major step toward becoming a first-class European facility. This opens new opportunities for INA and our cooperation within the MOL Group,” Szabolcs said.
