On Thursday, the Government nominated the Governor of the Croatian National Bank (CNB) Boris Vujčić for the position of Vice-President of the European Central Bank (ECB) at a closed session, and the Minister of Justice, Administration and Digital Transformation Damir Habijan gave his full support to his candidacy in a statement to reporters after the Government session.
“At the initiative of Boris Vujčić, the Government proposed his candidacy today at a closed session. I think this is a kind of recognition for Vujčić personally, but also for the Government's policy in cooperation with the CNB, especially if we are talking about entering the Eurozone, i.e. everything that has been done in a relatively short period of time. And it would certainly be good, a kind of reward and recognition, and I would say also raising the reputation of the Republic of Croatia, if Vujčić succeeds in this. Full support,” said Damir Habijan.
As a reminder, the term of office of Philip Lane, former Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, as Vice-President of the European Central Bank expires in early June 2027.
As Vujčić pointed out in an interview with a German business newspaper at the end of November, the process will officially begin soon, and then it is up to the governments to nominate their candidates.
“I have been a Deputy Governor or Governor for 25 years. I am certainly a central banker, in all aspects of central banking, and I want to remain a central banker in one way or another,” he commented for Boersen-Zeitung, adding that it is a fact that Central Eastern Europe has never had a seat on the ECB board.
