A bomb uncovered last week during excavations in the Pula neighborhood of Veli Vrh has been successfully deactivated and destroyed. The World War II bomb was de-activated on site, and then transported to the nearby Ližnjan training ground where it was destroyed.

Bomb disposal experts say they have already encountered this type of bomb. Weighing approximately 250 kilograms and containing some 60 kilograms of dynamite, the device is from the Second World War, and was made in Britain in 1945. The Head of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service of the Police Directorate, Tomislav Vukoja: "We expected that it might be a little easier to unscrew the trigger mechanism, but it wasn't. However, we had pliers on hand and unscrewed the trigger mechanism, removed the detonator and the bomb is now disabled."

During the de-activation local residents were evacuated. The Commander of the Pula Public Fire Department, Ivica Rojnić: "Together with the Red Cross we came to help those who couldn't evacuate on their own, mostly the infirm."

The bomb was initially discovered when a local began digging foundations for his house.
