As of midnight, for the first time since its construction, the tunnel fee for the Sv. Ilija tunnel, which runs through the Biokovo Mountain, has been lifted.
On the strength of a government decision, the tunnel has, as of January 1st, 2018, been placed under the Croatian Roads Company and the tunnel fee lifted.
The tunnel, which connects the Imotski area with Makarska was first opened to traffic in 2013. Since then some 5.4 million cars have passed through the tunnel, paying a tunnel fee of 20kn.
The Croatian Motorways Company took in roughly 130 million Kuna from the tunnel.
