At 8:49 AM on Monday morning a freight train owned by the Rail Cargo Carrier - Croatia (RCC) Company derailed between Meja and Škrljevo stations and collided with another rail car owned by the Croatian Railways Infrastructure (HŽ Infrastruktura) Company.
The RCC train, which was traveling towards Rijeka, for reasons as yet unknown did not stop at the Meja station, which is mandatory, and after passing through the station collided with a HŽ car that serves to maintain railway infrastructure. Traffic between the two stations has been cancelled, and passenger transport to Rijeka has been temporarily assumed by bus.
And while the cause of the accident is not yet known, according to a HŽ press release an investigation is ongoing and railway accident investigators were dispatched to the scene of the crash immediately. The 19 wagon freight train was transporting grain that is now scattered on the track. HŽ noted that only after all of the relevant data related to the accident has been collected and analyzed will a final determined be made as to whether there were any failures related to the safety of the railway system. Darko Barišić is a member of the board member of the Croatian Railways Infrastructure Company: "A collision occurred between a freight train of the privately owned Rail Cargo Carrier and a heavy motor train owned by the Croatian Railways Infrastructure Company. For reasons yet to be determined, the freight train passed through the Meja station, where it should have stopped, and ran into our train. No injuries have been reported. An investigation is ongoing, and I hope we will have the results soon."
