Over the past two days, new traffic regulations on Slavonska Avenue in Zagreb have at least partially eased the severe congestion that followed the massive fire that destroyed the Vjesnik tower.
On the night of 17 November 2025, shortly before midnight, a fire broke out on the 15th floor of the Vjesnik building and quickly spread throughout the 16-storey skyscraper - gutting much of the interior and heavily damaging the exterior.
The blaze forced the deployment of 93 firefighters with 30 vehicles, who battled flames through the night and the following morning.
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though the damage has been described as total.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Branko Bačić, confirmed on Tuesday that the building will be demolished - but said the method is still under deliberation.
“In the responses we’ve received to our request for proposals, there are offers to tear down the building by controlled implosion, and others that suggest mechanical demolition from top to bottom. We will review the offers over the next few days and talk to structural-engineering experts so that we can choose one of the methods,” the minister said.
Meanwhile, Tomislav Tomašević, Mayor of Zagreb, expressed hope that the government will act quickly so that traffic in the city can return to normal.
“It’s in our interest that this be completed as soon as possible. Of course, everything must be done according to professional codes and guidelines - demolishing a building like this is no small feat. Safety must always be paramount. We hope it will be done very soon. However, we are not in charge. This is up to the government. We are merely being informed,” he said.
