Cyclone Boris has hit Croatia and brought a sudden and violent change in the weather. Temperatures throughout most of the country have dropped by fifteen degrees Celsius.
Along with a significant drop in temperatures, cyclone Boris has also brought massive quantities of rain fell on the Istrian peninsula and in parts of Dalmatia. Meteorologist Zoran Vakula: “In question is an area of reduced air pressure, a cyclone that is moving through our part of Europe and bringing with it a significant change in the weather. There's warm air coming from one direction, while sold air is coming from the north and northwest of the continent. These two air masses are merging and as a result in the coming days we will see heavy rains, which some parts of the country have already experienced. For example, over the past twenty-four hours Gorski Kotar and the northern Adriatic have seen the most rainfall. According to the official data from the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service more than fifty liters of rain per square meter. The most in Crni Lug and Risnjak at roughly seventy-two liters, and based on unofficial measurements the Buje region in Istra saw more than one hundred liters, which is why we have reports of some flooding.”
Croatia has also seen numerous twisters throughout the day, especially in the Zadar and Šibenik area: “This is the result of the convergence of cold and warm air. Twisters are small tornadoes that arise with the abrupt influx of cold air on warm terrain, and this converging of cold and warm air leads to a vortex. This is nothing unusual, we've had them before, we have them now, and we'll have them in the future,” Vakula said.
However, the real shift in the weather is expected on Thursday afternoon and overnight into Friday, with heavy rains, cold temperatures and high winds expected as we move toward the weekend.
Meanwhile, a severe storm accompanied by heavy rains hit the town of Božava on the island of Dugi otok, this morning. According to locals some 150 liters of rain fell per square meter in roughly an hour, with local officials reporting minor damage to road and other infrastructure.
