Croatia has recorded 89 outbreaks of African swine fever, prompting the government to warn that the situation is becoming increasingly serious.

Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister David Vlajčić said 44 outbreaks have been confirmed in Osijek-Baranja County and 45 in Virovitica-Podravina County.

He said the number of new cases has risen sharply, with 12 outbreaks confirmed on Friday alone and 18 reported a few days earlier. Nearly one-third of all confirmed outbreaks have been recorded in the past several days.

More than 2,800 pigs have been euthanized so far in an effort to contain the disease.

"The number of euthanized animals remains relatively small, at 2,822 pigs. However, that number could quickly rise if the situation continues as it is today," Vlajčić said.

The minister said the government had invested more than €50 million in compensation, prevention and disease-control measures, including €4.8 million paid out this year to 79 beneficiaries and around €3 million invested in strengthening biosecurity. Despite those efforts, he said, the situation on the ground remains deeply concerning.
