Croatia marked the 35th anniversary of the first ceremonial review of the National Guard Corps in Zagreb today. On May 28th, 1991, the first units of the Croatian Army and police were presented to the Croatian public at a military parade held at the Zagreb Football Club stadium in Kranjčevićeva Street.

The May 28th 1991 ceremonial review represented the beginning of the formation of the Croatian Armed Forces, which under the leadership of the first Croatian President Franjo Tuđman successfully defended Croatia from the Serbian and Yugoslav People's Army war of aggression in the early 1990's.

To commemorate the event a ceremonial reception is being held at the National and University Library followed by a concert at the Zagreb fountains. Here’s how Deputy Prime Minister and Veterans' Affairs Minister Tomo Medved, himself a veteran of the Homeland War commented on the importance of the May 28th ceremonial review: “This is where the first four Guards Brigades were formed, our Tigers, Thunder, Martens and Spiders. Later another three Guards Brigades were formed. This was the forming of the core of the future of the Croatian Armed Forces, the core of the victorious army - the people who would stand in defense of the Republic of Croatia, people who would defend the Croatian homeland, and carry out brilliant operations to liberate our occupied territories as a result of the Greater Serbian war of aggression.”
