With a smile and a strong, clear voice, Pope Leo XIV addressed the faithful today for the first time since undergoing surgery on his lung five days ago.
Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican, he thanked people around the world for their prayers and said he would gradually resume his duties, with God’s help.
On Tuesday, the Pope underwent surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. His condition had prompted speculation about the potential impact of his illness on his 17-month pontificate.
“With God’s help and your prayers”
The Pope walked unaided to the window of the Apostolic Palace and led the traditional Sunday Angelus prayer before a crowd of pilgrims.
“Having overcome this delicate phase, I will now gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers,” Pope Leo said.
His first public appearance since the surgery was marked by a smile, a clear voice and words of gratitude to everyone who had prayed for his recovery.
Pope announces gradual return to duties
Pope Leo XIV said he would gradually resume his responsibilities as head of the Catholic Church, which has approximately 1.4 billion faithful worldwide.
In his address, he urged the faithful to set aside selfish ambitions and serve God wholeheartedly, emphasizing the importance of faith and dedication.
