Croatia has launched an international architectural and urban planning tender for a new stadium at Maksimir Stadium and the Svetice Sports and Recreation Center in Zagreb, marking a major step forward for the long-awaited projects.

Construction is expected to begin in 2029, with the existing stadium set to be demolished in 2027. The Croatian government and the City of Zagreb have agreed to split the €175 million cost equally.

The tender calls for a concept design for a new stadium with a capacity of around 35,000 seats, along with supporting facilities, parking, and three training pitches. One of the pitches will include a 1,500-seat grandstand.

Organizers expect strong international interest, with proposals to be submitted within 95 days of the competition’s launch. A jury made up of Croatian and international architects, experts, and representatives of the government and the City of Zagreb will select the winning design.

Following the jury’s decision, the contracting process for the stadium’s design will begin. This is a prerequisite for securing location and building permits, as well as preparing documentation for the public procurement process for construction.
