Believers make pilgrimages to Marian shrines throughout Croatia

It is the Feast of the Assumption. Numerous believers throughout Croatia make pilgrimages to Marian shrines to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven. Eucharistic celebrations and processions are held from Marija Bistrica and Trsat to Aljmaš and Sinj.

The central mass celebration in Marija Bistrica was led by Zagreb Archbishop Cardinal Josip Bozanić.

“Today, let's commend all families to Mary and pray for them to be sanctuaries of life and schools of the future for new generations. It is necessary to promote, defend and protect families because they are the greatest asset of our society,” said Cardinal Bozanić.

Many pilgrims already started arriving in Marija Bistrica yesterday. Due to epidemiological measures, all masses will be held outdoors.

“We traditionally have a beautiful Path of Light on our Bistrica Calvary, when with the glow of candles, prayer, contemplation and Marian songs, we in some way prayerfully prepare for the festival itself,” said Domagoj Matošević, rector of the Shrine of the Bistrica Mother of God, Marija Bistrica.

Thousands of believers in Sinj

Thousands of believers arrived at the shrine of Our Lady of Sinj. The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was solemnly celebrated with a procession and a mass on Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square.

Since last night, rivers of believers from Dalmatia and Herzegovina have been pouring into Sinj. Holy masses started already at 4 o'clock. The central mass celebration began at 9:30 a.m. and was presided over by the new Archbishop of Split-Makar, Msgr. Dražen Kutleša. In his sermon, he pointed out that Mary is a beacon of hope.

Ceremony in Aljmaš

Many believers are expected today at the shrine of Our Lady of Refuge in Aljmaš, the largest Marian shrine in Osijek-Baranja County. Masses are held all day, from 6 am.

“A large number of pilgrims are coming to the shrine, we made sure that they felt as safe as possible, ensured the presence of emergency services and Red Cross volunteers for the entire day, we prepared drinking water and sanitary facilities and enough parking spaces,” said Darko Barjaktarević, coordinator of the pilgrimage organization.

Thousands of pious souls are making a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Vrpolje today - to the Marian shrine of the Šibenik diocese.

“People come here with their needs, pains, joys and thanks. In the times before corona there used to be 35-37,000 people, now it is a little less, last year 25,000. Yesterday there were maybe 7,000-8,000 believers,” said Don Ante Omazić, parish priest and rector of the shrine of Our Lady of Vrpolje.

A special feast of the Assumption is celebrated in Trpanj on Pelješac. The faithful follow the Holy Mass from their boats.

The parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Stenjevac is among the oldest parishes in Zagreb. Rivers of believers will visit Stenjevec today, and after mass, the holiday is celebrated long into the night with an entertainment program.
