In Beli Manastir, a commemoration was held to mark the 35th anniversary of the murder of police officers from the local police station. To date no one has been held accountable for their murder.
On this day in 1991, rebel Serbs killed officers Marjan Kuzman and Zoran Sinanović and a member of the Special Police Vidoja Marić, in an ambush near the Remont Company in Beli Manastir. These were the first victims of the Serb and Yugoslav People's Army aggression in the Baranja region of Croatia. The wartime commander of the 4th police station in Beli Manastir, Anto Prgomet: "These were the first victims of in Baranja, after which the special police unit from Osijek came to our aid, that's when where police officer Vidoja Marić was killed in an ambush set up between Uglješ and Švajcarnica."
"This has been classified as a war conflict and these perpetrators have not been prosecuted so far, however, our police administration and police station are still conducting operations with the aim of identifying the perpetrators of other war crimes in the Baranja region," added , Beli Manastir Chief of Police, Ivica Tkalec.
Also on hand at today’s commemoration was Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Nataša Tramišak: "The Croatian police here in Baranja, Beli Manastir, as well as throughout the Republic of Croatia, made a great contribution to the defense of the homeland and the preservation of Croatian territorial integrity."
