Croatian flavors, tradition, and the hard-working hands of local producers have received another major European recognition! From now on, Banski kestenov med (Bani Kestenov Honey / Banovina Chestnut Honey) and Čepinski kupus (Čepin Cabbage) carry the Protected Designation of Origin from the European Union, raising the number of protected Croatian products at the European level to 54. These products preserve the authentic flavors of Banovina and Slavonia, as well as a tradition passed down through generations.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries reported that Croatia now has a total of 54 products registered in the European Union with either a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), or a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) designation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries David Vlajčić pointed out that behind these products stand hard-working farmers and beekeepers, along with a tradition preserved across generations.

"Croatia now has 54 products protected at the EU level, and we will soon add Slavonian ham to the list," Vlajčić stated.

He congratulated the producers responsible for this success and emphasized that the Ministry will continue to protect and promote domestic products.

Banski kestenov med stands out for its exceptional quality, recognizable characteristics, and strong connection to the Banovina region.

It is produced from the nectar of the sweet chestnut tree and is characterized by an amber color, an intense scent of chestnut blossom, and a distinct bitterness.

The application for name protection was submitted by the Petrinja Beekeeping Association to preserve the product's authenticity, increase the visibility of local production, and promote the rich beekeeping tradition of Banovina.

Another Croatian product to receive European protection is Čepinski kupus, a recognizable variety of white cabbage whose production is deeply tied to the Slavonia region.

It is distinguished by a pronounced aroma, a sweetish-bitter taste, and a fine, crunchy yet tender texture.

Its production is based on an indigenous, preserved variety recognized in 2016, and all stages of cultivation take place within a defined geographical area.

The application for protection was submitted by the "Čepinac" Association of Čepin Cabbage Producers, which brings together growers dedicated to preserving this traditional variety.

The European protection of Banski kestenov med and Čepinski kupus serves as another confirmation of the value of Croatian agricultural heritage and local products, which represent Croatia beyond its borders through their flavors, quality, and tradition.
