Marko Perković Thompson drew a full house at the Zagreb Arena on Saturday night, performing in front of thousands of fans.

The singer has long been at odds with mainly left-wing politicians, including Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, over a controversial World War II-era phrase, “for the homeland, ready,” which opens one of his most popular songs.

During the concert, Thompson addressed the audience directly, criticizing the city government:

"We know that today the city of Zagreb is governed by an extreme left-wing sect and the remnants of the Yugo-communist regime. That's why I call on everyone who disagrees with this government—and the decisions they make—to oppose it democratically, through elections. Elections can be regular, but they can also be brought about abruptly."

Mayor Tomašević responded the following day via a post on Facebook:

"I have been elected mayor of Zagreb twice in democratic elections. The mandate and trust to lead this city were given to me by the people of Zagreb. As long as I have their trust, I will carry out my duties conscientiously and responsibly, and I will continue to make decisions I believe are right—regardless of pressure."

The exchange highlights the ongoing tension between Thompson, a popular musician, and the city’s political leadership, with both sides emphasizing democratic principles while disagreeing sharply on the cultural and political symbolism of the song.
