A growing number of Croatian emigrants are expressing interest in returning and working in domestic companies, according to the Croatian Chamber of Commerce in Austria.
To connect emigrants with opportunities in Croatia, the Chamber, supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Austria and under the Ministry of Demography and Immigration, organized the event Return to Croatia – an opportunity for employment in Croatian companies in Salzburg.
“Through direct contact with the Croatian community, we see that many emigrants wish to return, while the Croatian economy faces labor shortages. Today, emigrants can learn about business and career opportunities directly from company representatives. Initiatives like this help strengthen ties between the homeland and the diaspora,” said Luka Burilović, President of the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.
The event also allows for sharing experiences and addressing challenges faced by returnees, such as administrative procedures or labor market integration.
“The gap between Austria and Croatia is narrowing, while in Croatia it is widening, increasing interest in return from the DACH region. Croatian companies also increasingly need skilled workers. That’s why our office in Austria has been providing information on Croatia, government programs, and available support for two years,” explained Daniela Reinisch, Director of the HGK Representative Office in Austria.
Ambassador Daniel Glunčić highlighted the importance of supporting return initiatives:
“Strong economic indicators show stable development in Croatia. Young people today have good opportunities for employment and career growth. We are pleased to support this event, which strengthens ties with the diaspora and encourages return.”
Zvonko Milas, State Secretary of the Central State Office for Croats Abroad, noted that while some return mechanisms are in place, stronger coordination is needed:
“This meeting demonstrates the value of our emigrants and their experience for Croatia’s economy. The government supports return through programs like ‘I Choose Croatia’ and tax incentives. New initiatives, such as the LearnCro app for learning Croatian, further connect emigrants with the homeland and encourage them to build their future here,” Milas said.
