Riera takes the reign at Istra

In the domestic football league, Istra 1961 has announced that Spaniard Oriol Riera will be the team's new head coach. Riera comes to Istra from the Spanish team Uniostas FC, from the third tier of Spanish football. He also coached lower league clubs Tudelano and Estepona.

The 39-year-old Oriol Riera will replace Goran Tomić who was dismissed this weekend after Istra's 2:1 loss to Slaven Belupo. Tomić only spent a brief two months with the club before being let go. Riera, who is now the third Spanish coach in the Croatian league, played professionally for 16 seasons. However most of that time as a player was spent in the lower divisions, with only two relatively brief stints in the Spanish first division with Deportivo and Osasuna.

After six rounds of the play in the domestic league, Istra 1961 is second last in the standings with five points from one win, two draws and three losses. Riera's first test will come on Sunday, when Istra hosts Osijek.
