Luka Modrić was officially presented to the media and fans by Italian side AC Milan on Monday.
The 39-year-old said he would provide the team with experience and hopefully "fulfill all the fans' expectations".
As the most trophy-winning player in the history of Real Madrid, Modrić left the Spanish giants earlier this summer after 13 years.
"I grew up watching Italian football and Milan was my favourite team. Furthermore, my idol, Zvonimir Boban, played on the team," said Modrić as he explained his fondness for the club.
"When Milan offered me this opportunity, it wasn't difficult for me to make my decision. This is a great club and it will be a big challenge but I wanted to keep playing at a high level," he said.
"I've always been quite competitive and I want to transfer that attitude to this team. Milan always strives to win trophies and I hope we will show that kind of character on the pitch. Milan is a big club with an army of dedicated fans. The welcome I experienced in Milan was impressive," he added.
His first game is expected to be an Italian Cup match against Bari on 17 August.
