The 2026 FIFA World Cup begins today, marking the start of the largest tournament in the competition's history.
Hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the expanded tournament features 48 national teams competing across 16 host cities from June 11 to July 19. Over 39 days, a total of 104 matches will be played.
The opening match sees Mexico take on South Africa tonight in Mexico City at 9 p.m. CET. The tournament will culminate with the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19.
Croatia will begin its World Cup campaign on June 17 against England at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The Croatian Government has pledged its support for the national team throughout the tournament. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced that he will travel to Canada for Croatia's group-stage match against Panama on June 24.
During his official visit, Plenković is also scheduled to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and representatives of the Croatian community.
“We wish the team success in the weeks ahead,” Plenković said at Thursday's cabinet meeting.
Justice Minister Damir Habijan is expected to attend Croatia's opening match in Texas.
Words of encouragement also came from Dubrovnik, where former Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović and Member of the European Parliament Nikolina Brnjac expressed their support for the national team.
Although neither will be able to attend the tournament due to prior commitments, both said they plan to follow Croatia's matches through live broadcasts.
“I will be watching the games in Croatia and am looking forward to all of them. I firmly believe our team will give it their all,” said Brnjac.
Grabar-Kitarović also shared an optimistic message for the squad.
“Our expectations are even higher than in Doha or Moscow. But all joking aside, guys, go for it, play well, and give your best, no matter the outcome,” she said.
As Croatia prepares to begin its World Cup journey, support continues to build from government officials, public figures, and fans across the country.
