Croatia returns to action tonight at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Zlatko Dalić's side taking on Panama in the second round of Group L in Toronto. After opening the tournament with a defeat to England, the Vatreni are looking to get their campaign back on track with their first victory.

Panama, appearing at only their second World Cup, are also chasing history. The Central American side has yet to earn a point at football's biggest tournament and will be hoping to break that streak against Croatia.

Speaking ahead of the match, Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić said his squad is fully fit and ready. "We are all healthy, we are all ready, and there are no dilemmas about the squad," Dalić said.

The coach warned that Panama's compact defensive setup and quick counter-attacks will present a challenge.

"They're a good team with a congested and strong defensive end given their 5-4-1 formation. They are very mobile behind the ball and they play responsibly. When they do secure possession they transition quickly into a counter-attack with long balls for their three speedy players on offense, so we have to shut that down. The most important thing is that we have to position ourselves as the favourites, which we are," said Dalić.

Tonight's match will also see captain Luka Modrić reach another extraordinary milestone. The veteran midfielder is set to make his 200th appearance for Croatia, becoming only the fourth player in international football history to reach the 200-cap mark.

Modrić is competing in his fifth World Cup and has also represented Croatia at five European Championships, further cementing his status as one of the country's greatest players.

Croatian supporters are expected to create a home atmosphere in Toronto, with estimates suggesting that up to 30,000 fans could be in attendance. Thousands of Croatian-Canadians, along with supporters who have travelled from Croatia and elsewhere, have descended on the city ahead of the match.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who is in Canada on an official visit and plans to attend the game, expressed confidence in the national team.

"We wished them plenty of success, and told them that all of Croatia stands with them and that we expect a win today. As far as I can see everyone is healthy and eagerly awaiting the game. We're all looking forward to another massive day for Croatia. The atmosphere in Toronto is fantastic. There is a large number of Croatian-Canadians here, but also those from Croatia and other countries. The entire atmosphere is very positive and I'm confident that the players on the pitch will truly give their maximum," said Plenković.

Ahead of the match, Canadian police issued special recommendations for Croatian supporters, according to the Croatian Football Federation.

Fans have been reminded that alcohol consumption in public places is prohibited, except in designated fan zones, around the stadium and at Trinity Bellwoods Park, where many supporters are expected to gather before kickoff. Alcohol purchased inside the stadium may also be consumed there.

Authorities noted that cannabis use is legal in public spaces in Toronto, but not inside the stadium. Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited in the stands, although designated smoking areas will be available.

Supporters have also been warned that pyrotechnics, including flares and firecrackers, are strictly prohibited. Those caught using them could face arrest, fines, criminal charges and possible deportation.
