Environmental organizations and local residents in Sisak-Moslavina County have stood in opposition to the announced construction of as many as 18 chicken farms in the county by a Ukrainian investor.

The Ukrainian investor's representatives claim that the construction of these mega-farms will be done according to the highest environmental protection standards. However, the Chair of Parliament's Agriculture Committee, independent MP Marijana Petir is unconvinced: “It is important to have an estimate of the cumulative impact on the ecological capacity of the environment and local agriculture, but also its impact on safety infrastructure. Without this information it is difficult to make a final decision, and therefore I can say that I have my reservations about this project and I share the concerns of these citizens.”

Meanwhile, Sisak Mayor Domagoj Orlić pointed out that the project is not even in line with the city's spatial plan: “This project is not in line with the valid spatial plan and as of today it cannot get a building permit. The former city authority sold city land in the southern industrial zone a few hundred meters away from residential buildings and initiated changes to the spatial plan the following day.”

Citizen's groups have announced that they will stage a protest against the building of these mega-farms in Zagreb's King Tomislav Square on Saturday.
