Prime Minister Andrej Plenković took part on Wednesday in a World Economic Forum debate on Redefining Europe’s Place in the World, where he addressed tensions over Greenland and reiterated the European Union’s support for Ukraine.

Plenković said EU leaders are expected to reaffirm their backing of Denmark at an upcoming European Council meeting, while also seeking to preserve strong ties with Washington.

“This meeting on Thursday night is supposed to strengthen our position on supporting Denmark — obviously the logical way to do it — but also to maintain sensible, reasonable and respectful transatlantic ties with the United States,” Plenković said. “Despite all the noise, the U.S. is an ally and a friend.”

Turning to Russia’s war in Ukraine, the prime minister stressed that the EU must remain steadfast in its support for Kyiv.

“I think the key aspect is to remain vigorously on the side of the Ukrainians and on the side of international law,” Plenković said.

Plenković is spending three days in Davos, where he is taking part in several panel discussions and holding bilateral meetings with other leaders on the sidelines of the forum.

He also commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to establish a “Board for Peace” in Gaza, saying Croatia supports initiatives aimed at ending conflicts but warned that any international agreement must follow proper procedures.

“This is not a document that can be looked at today and signed tomorrow,” Plenković said, emphasizing the need for consultations with relevant government departments, legal experts and other stakeholders before any decision is made.

The prime minister said Croatia is, in principle, open to participating in peace initiatives, particularly in a world increasingly marked by conflict.

“We are always ready to support initiatives that lead to peace,” he said. “Wars, conflicts and crises are a defining feature of the world we live in today, and any effort that contributes to peace is something the Croatian government welcomes.”

The White House has announced that Trump is set to officially launch the Board for Peace on Thursday in Davos. The body was originally conceived as part of efforts to implement the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza.

Around 50 countries have been invited to join the council, including France, Germany and the United Kingdom, as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Croatia and the European Commission are also among the invitees.
