Opposition politicians are pointing the finger at the HDZ for rampant corruption at state-owned companies.
Split Mayor Ivica Puljak commented on protest activists are planning on September 10th in front of the HDZ's headquarters.
"The only effective protest is for HDZ voters to turn their backs on the party at the ballot box as they have done in Split and to choose between the HDZ and Croatia. I am confident that everyone who loves this country will choose Croatia,” Puljak said.
The Croatian Sovereigntists say this was not just a case of stealing from INA but stealing from the Croatian people. They plan to draft a bill that would introduce life sentences and no statute of limitations for white-collar crimes of this kind.
"Our pensioners are struggling to pay their electricity and gas bills. A majority of our small businesses are going to have to close shop because they are getting gas and electricity bills that are several times larger than what they were paying before. On the other hand, we have a group of people that are shamelessly getting rich of off our backs," said Sovereigntist MP Vesna Vučemilović.
Parliamentary leaders have turned down a request to hold an emergency session of parliament to address the INA case.
