President of the Republic Zoran Milanović participated in a ceremonial session of the Orahovica City Council on the occasion of the celebration of the Day of the City and the Feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross.

Speaking after the ceremonial session of the city council, President Zoran Milanović commented on current political events. He said that Croatia depends on food imports, which worsens price inflation and the detrimental effect it is having on citizens’ living standard: “Croatia has gone from being a food producer to one that is dependent on imports.”

Responding to journalists' questions about what can be done to reduce the impact of food prices on inflation, he said that nothing can be done in the short term and that in the long term it is too late for some things, because Croatia, as he said, has gone from being a food producer to one that is dependent on imports, unlike the EU, which as a whole produces enough food for its needs and has a surplus.

"We have price increases that are devaluing salaries, and the vast majority of our people live pay-check to pay-check. They are not entrepreneurs, they do not have shares, they do not have securities, they are renters, and they do not have houses on the coast, and so on. They spend a relatively large part of their income on basic needs, including food," Milanović said.

The President concluded that Croatia is in trouble in this regard, as it produces practically nothing and relies almost entirely on food imports.
