Milanović meets with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe

The Croatian President and Commander in Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces met with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), who also serves as Commander of the United States European Command (U.S. EUCOM), in Zagreb on Wednesday.

President Zoran Milanović received the Commander of NATO Forces in Europe and Commander of the US Armed Forces for Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, in Zagreb today. During their talks President Milanović stressed that NATO is a defensive alliance in which Croatia participates in solidarity, guided by its own interests. He also emphasized the importance of reaching a consensus in NATO’s political decision-making and highlighted the importance of collective defense to Croatia.

Along with NATO's current agenda and the numerous security challenges in Europe and the war in Ukraine, the two men also exchanged views on future challenges in the Euro-Atlantic area, with President Milanović emphasizing the importance of stability in Southeast Europe, including Kosovo.

General Grynkewich arrived in Croatia at the invitation of the Chief of the General Staff of the Croatian Armed Forces Lieutenant General Tihomir Kundid. SACEUR is one of NATO’s two strategic commanders and is responsible for the Alliance’s deterrence and defense tasks, as well as for conducting all NATO military operations and missions.

General Grynkewich also met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Ivan Anušić, who emphasized that the United States is Croatia's most important strategic partner in the field of defense and security and that the US government significantly contributes to the development of Croatia's defense capabilities.
