Luxembourg and Croatia discuss further support for Ukraine

Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden was received today by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković during an official visit to Zagreb. 

The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations and economic cooperation, along with broader European issues including the EU budget and continued support for Ukraine.

Prime Minister Plenković highlighted Luxembourg’s significant economic role in Croatia, noting that companies registered in Luxembourg have been among the country’s largest investors in recent years. He said he expects this cooperation to deepen, particularly in the IT, energy, and defence sectors.

The leaders also addressed the latest peace negotiations involving Russia and the United States, stressing that Ukraine’s position must remain central. Plenković warned that any eventual peace agreement must be fair and balanced, as it will set a precedent for handling “future crises.” He added that EU plans were being prepared to provide an additional €130 billion in support for Ukraine.

Prime Minister Frieden echoed this stance, emphasising that the consequences of the conflict extend far beyond Ukraine’s borders.

“It’s not just about Ukraine, it’s about all of us,” he said. “International law and its respect are key principles when it comes to a peace agreement-a lasting peace. It cannot just be a ceasefire. It must be a lasting peace where Ukraine’s sovereignty is fully respected, and where we reconfirm the principle that borders cannot be changed by force. Especially for smaller countries, international law is our strongest weapon. Therefore, we will support Ukraine in those negotiations.”

While thanking the United States for its diplomatic initiatives, Frieden underlined that matters of European security must be negotiated with the participation of European leaders.
