Croatian Democratic Union relative winner of election in Lika-Senj County

Local elections were held yesterday for the county assembly in Lika-Senj County.

The coalition led by the Croatian Democratic Union was the relative winner taking 13 seats in the assembly. The slate of County Prefect Darko Milinović took 7 seats while the Croatian Party of Rights took 3, the Ante Dabo independent slate took 3 and the Independent Democratic Serb Party took 2 seats.

The Social Democratic Party will not have a representative in the assembly, which caused the head of their county branch Tomislav Zrinski to resign.

“The Croatian Democratic Union has demonstrated that we remained and that we will surely be the strongest political option in Lika Senj County in the future, said Marijan Kustić, the head of the Croatian Democratic Union slate, during celebrations following the final results.

Despite having the best result at the election, the Croatian Democratic Union won half as many votes as at regular local elections some two years ago.

Darko Milinović did not manage to take Lika away from his former party with his independent slate.

“We led a political battle here with the heads of the state and with the heads of the Croatian Democratic Union. If you ask me whether or not I'm satisfied, we achieved a respectable result,” said Milinović.

The stability of Milinović's position is now in question. Asked if they would bring him down as county prefect, the Croatian Democratic Union responded that they haven't said anything in regards to bringing him down, but first need to talk with potential coalition partners to constitute the county assembly and then they will discuss other issues.

For his part Milinović has said that there will be no rotten compromise and he will ask the Croatian Democratic Union to form a majority and for the budget to be adopted by April 15th. He said if this doesn't happen he will consider other political decisions.
