Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina have long been calling for a reform of the election law in Bosnia and Herzegovina that will ensure all three constituent peoples of that country equal representation in elected bodies and state institutions. Their calls have been backed by Croatia, the European Union and the United States.

US Special Envoy Matthew Palmer and European Union diplomat Angelina Eichhorst began talks with Bosnian politicians on electoral reform in Sarajevo today. Dragan Čović, the president of the largest Croat political party in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the HDZ, reiterated that his party will insist on solutions that will ensure the legitimate political and institutional representation of all three constituent peoples in that country. However, Bosnian Muslim leader, Bakir Izetbegović, continues to force the idea that members of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina be elected indirectly in parliament. The talks are set to continue tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the international community's High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, said today that if there continues to be a lack of dialogue between political players and if the country's integrity continues to be jeopardized, all options are on the table. Schmidt was speaking in the House of Representatives in the wake of the country's worst political crisis since the signing of the Dayton Accords, caused by a blockage of the work of state institutions by Republika Srpska officials. The High Representative described the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina as "one of the biggest challenges" to its sovereignty since 1995.
