At a meeting of European Union Interior Ministers, among other things, it was concluded that a new wave of migrants must not occur. “Europe's policy is increasing protection of its external borders,” said Croatian Interior Minister Davor Božinović. It is important for the European External Action Service to engage with countries surrounding Afghanistan, so that people leaving Afghanistan can be cared for in countries closest to them.

The European Union has condemned the behavior of the Belarusian authorities and President Lukashenko, who use migrants as a means of political pressure.

“They use migrants as a manner of achieving certain political goals, which is completely unacceptable and Europe will not accept this. We have all stood behind the efforts of Lithuania which is at this time most exposed, but there is also Latvia and Poland,” said Minister Davor Božinović.

As far as migrants are concerned, Božinović said that 2015 must not be repeated, adding that it would not be a solution for the EU or citizens of countries that refugees are coming from.

“That is why it is important to be engaged when we talk about Afghanistan and its neighboring countries, and conditions be secured there, through the UNHCR, for those people to stay there, and that all possible assistance is provided for them that Europe can provide,” said Božinović.

26 Croatian citizens have returned from Afghanistan; and Croatia wants to relocate about 20 people who worked for European institutions and Croatia in Afghanistan. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković spoke about the return of our citizens at today's government cabinet session.

“It's good that there were no consequences for our citizens and we continue with our openness to care for those Afghans who were connected with the Croatian contingent or people that worked and support the efforts of the international community or the European Union,” said Plenković.

Minister Božinović said this morning that Croatia will continue to strengthen control of Croatia's borders; this year the entry of 8,000 illegal migrants was prevented, of which almost half were from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
