The Rijeka Gateway Terminal was officially opened on Wednesday, marking the launch of one of the most technologically advanced and fully automated container terminals in this part of Europe.

The €500 million project represents a major step forward for Rijeka and is expected to usher in a new phase of economic and logistical development, strengthening Croatia's position as a global transportation hub.

At the opening ceremony, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković highlighted the strategic importance of the project for both the city and the country.

"This event is important for us because it is happening at a time when Croatia will, in 2026, chair two initiatives that connect the Mediterranean and continental Europe: the Three Seas Initiative, which links the Adriatic, Black, and Baltic Seas; and the presidency of the EU-MED 9, an alliance of nine Mediterranean EU member states," said Plenković.

"With this project, Rijeka stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the largest ports in the northern Adriatic and becomes a new center of intermodal connectivity in the region," added Minister Butković. "Together with the Port Authority, the national road management company, and the railway infrastructure company, we have created a system that connects sea, road, and rail into a single logistics unit. These investments are transforming the face of the city and the entire region."

The Rijeka Gateway Terminal is expected to significantly enhance trade flows between Central Europe and the Mediterranean, serving as a key link in the continent's logistics and transport network.
