The renovation of one of Zagreb’s cultural landmarks, the cinema Kino Europa, is set to begin this year, said Mayor Tomislav Tomašević during a speech on Friday as he outlined a list of projects the city is undertaking.
Mayor Tomašeić was addressing a special session of the City Assembly to mark Zagreb City Day. He also said the city would begin construction this year on a new sports stadium in Kranjčevićeva Street.
“At the end of the year, the restoration of the iconic Kino Europa will begin in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture,” the mayor emphasized at the event that was attended by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, President Zoran Milanović, and other distinguished guests.
Tomašević singled out work on sports infrastructure projects, emphasizing the start of structural renovation on Dom Sportova, the sports and concert arena, next month and work on the swimming pool in Špansko. He added that the city was expanding its tram lines for the first time in 22 years.
As a key priority of the city administration, he singled out securing kindergarten capacity for all children in the city.
“So far, four kindergartens have been completed and opened, three of which were financed entirely from the city’s budget, and another ten kindergartens are currently in the process of construction, said the mayor.
Tomašević said the city planned to complete five more schools by the end of the year. Post-earthquake reconstruction of city buildings and infrastructure, 188 out of 207 projects, have been completed, he added.
