Suspect in Zrće beach murder arrested

A 25-year-old British national suspected of murdering a 26-year-old fellow British national in the early hours of Wednesday morning on the island of Pag, was arrested on Thursday at the Split international airport as he was attempting to board a plane back to London.

The suspect was interrogated by state prosecutors in Zadar on Friday afternoon. He has declined to cooperate. The investigating judge in the case has remanded him to custody for 30 days on the grounds that he is a flight risk and that he may attempt to influence witnesses.The man has been identified as Douglas C.

“Since he was arrested while attempting to flee, I don't think I need to explain further. With regard to possible witness tampering, the witnesses are individuals who were present when the crime was committed and they must be questioned in order to shed light on this case. Besides the victim, who is dead, we have two more victims who were wounded," said Judge Hrvoje Visković.

Novalja mayor, Ante Dabo, said despite the unfortunate incident, Zrće was safe.

“There is not a single square meter of Zrće that is not under video surveillance. The suspect would not have been caught so quickly had it not been for the video surveillance. Cameras, security personnel and police, give this community a very high level of security. Furthermore, every driver working in public transportation has a security guard. Every nightclub, beach, and parking lot, has security guards. Lots of investment has been made into keeping our town safe,” Dabo said.

The mayor added that the future of the Hideout music festival in Zrće would be examined.
