Authorities and citizens alike in the eastern city of Osijek are tallying up the damage from yesterday's storm.

Rains and strong winds flooded basements, damaged roofs, uprooted trees and caused power outages. However, the city's Civil Protection Directorate announced on Friday that improvements to public infrastructure meant damage was a little less severe.

Deputy Mayor and head of the local Civil Protection Directorate Dragan Vulin said city firefighters responded to about sixty calls - forty of them involving flooded basements.

"Ten trees fell on roads, while one of them fell over the tram tracks and disrupted service. We had five interventions related to damaged roofs. One of those roofs was on the county economic centre," said Vulin.

Vulin noted that luckily the damage from Thursday's storm was not significant enough to declare a state of natural disaster.

Meanwhile, storms hit southern coastal areas as well.

Fire Chief for Dubrovnik-Neretva County Stjepan Simović said there were numerous dispatches in the municipality of Orebić

"The village of Lovište was hit hard. We had two open fires near the town of Orebić and in Korčula. We quickly extinguished all of those fires before the rains came. We also dispatched to parts of the Neretva valley, specifically the town of Ploče, where as a result of the heavy rains we had a couple of drainage issues and a couple of trees that posed a threat to traffic," said Simović.
