The Mayor of Vukovar has called for the opening of an exhibit titled: "Serbian Woman, Heroine of the Great War", be postponed until after the month of November and the commemorations linked to Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Homeland War and Remembrance Day for the Victims of Vukovar and Škabrnja.
After requesting that the exhibit be postponed until after the month of November, Vukovar Mayor Marijan Pavliček said that he has still not received a response from the Serb community. The so-called cultural event, which is scheduled to be opened in Vukovar on Tuesday, is being organized by the Serbian consulate in Croatia, the SDSS political party representing the Serb minority in Croatia and the Serb Cultural Center in Croatia. It comes on the heels of similar events in Split, Rijeka and Zagreb.
The events in Split which the Serb community said was linked to its Days of Serbian Culture program, evoked a protest from local residents, who noted the conspicuous timing of the event to coincide with the national holiday for Remembrance for Vukovar and Škabrnja. Similarly, in Zagreb some fifty people protested the opening of an exhibit honoring Dejan Medaković, the architect of the Serbian wars of aggression of the 1990's.
Serb political leaders maintain that these are cultural events that are not intended to undermine the events of November 18th, when Croatians from throughout the country flock to Vukovar and Škabrnja to pay their respects to the victims of the Serbian and Yugoslav People's Army war of aggression and the horrific war crimes committed their by Serb and JNA forces in the name of Serbian expansionism. According to Serb representatives, a decision on Mayor Pavliček's request will be announced tomorrow.
