The Croatian Air Force's Aerobatics Team Krila Oluje or Storm Wings, celebrated their 20th anniversary on Saturday at the military base in Zemunik Donji.
Defense Minister Ivan Anušić presented a certificate of commendation to the team's members. The air force put on an impressive air show for high school students and aviation enthusiasts, from parachute jumps by members of the Special Forces, fly-overs by military helicopters and Rafale fighter jets, and of course, daredevil feats by the aerobatics team.
"We simply fly...regardless of the accolades and commendations. But it is nice to know that what we do is appreciated. It's acknowledgement of all the work we have done and motivation for us to continue on this way,” said Darko Belančić, the team's leader.
Defense Minister Ivan Anušić said the aerobatics team was an important ambassador for Croatia around the world.
"I have nothing but high praise for our pilots, our flight instructors, our flight team, which as you can see, do impressive things with their planes. They represent our country, our air force, not just here but throughout Europe and the world,” said Defense Minister Ivan Anušić.
Minister Anušić also commented on the planned introduction of mandatory military service, setting out a timeline and how much it will cost.
"I think that by the end of June, by the end of the current session of parliament, we will be able to pass all the necessary legislation. After all that is done, the first notices can be sent out in August and September, with basic training beginning in the fall…The costs of basic military training, that is, the increase to the defense budget, is expected to be around 20 million euros annually,” said Anušić.
