After nearly two decades, Croatia has reintroduced mandatory basic military training.
The first 800 recruits arrived on Monday morning for the eight-week program at barracks in Slunj, Knin, and Požega.
During the training, recruits will receive 1,100 euros per month and will have priority when applying for jobs in the public sector.
“I think this is something that Croatian youth can – and should – do for the homeland. I also think it’s necessary, especially for our generation, which is too occupied with technology,” said recruit Luka Valentić.
Chief of the General Staff Tihomir Kundid explained that the plan and program are modern and tailored for young people. “They are specifically designed to meet the needs and interests of recruits, helping them reach the standards we expect,” he said.
“Over the next two months, recruits are expected to learn from their instructors and benefit from their knowledge and experience. The instructors have the recruits’ best interests in mind, and by the end of the training they will be better prepared to face the challenges of life,” added Defense Minister Ivan Anušić.
The goal is to train around 4,000 recruits each year.
