At the 2026 European Men’s Handball Championships Croatia will play Germany at 5:45 CET on Friday in the semi-finals. Croatia advanced to the semi-final following a hard fought 27:25 win over Hungary in Malmo Sweden on Wednesday night.
Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Croatian coach Dagur Sigurdsson slammed the tournament organizers and the European Handball Federation (EHF) for their poor treatment of his team. He noted that Croatia played two tough matches back-to-back before travelling four hours to Herning on Thursday: "We had to do two games, game number six and game number seven we had to do inside twenty-two hours. Next morning they put us in a bus like frozen chicken and drive us here, and we're not even close to the training hall. And then I have to go to a press conference, to come back to the hotel at six o'clock, to check if my players are healthy, to have a meeting, to have an analyzing of the game tomorrow, and we are in the semi-finals! It's absolutely a disgrace!"
He went on to note that it was interesting how it worked out that Germany not only did not have travel to the semi-final venue as it played its group stage games in Herning, but that it also had two of the last four days off. Sigurdsson ended by asking when he could leave and get back to business with his team. Croatia will be looking to advance to the final and win its first ever gold medal from a European Championships, having won three European silver medals and three bronze medals to date.
