The doubles final in Munich featured a showdown between to Croatians, both of them members of Croatia’s Davis Cup team, and their respective partners.
In the end, the more experienced 33-year-old Ivan Dodig, together with his partner American Rajeev Ram, beat 29-year-old Nikola Mektić and Austrian Alexander Peya 6:3, 7:5 in the final of the ATP tournament in Munich.
This is Dodig’s tenth doubles title, but his first with new partner Ram. He has six titles with Brazilian Marcelo Melo, two with Spaniard Marcel Granollers and one with fellow Croatian Mate Pavić. This is Ram’s 15th career title and his first on clay.
Dodig and Ram made a decisive break in the first set to give themselves a 5:3 lead. In the second they survived two set points for Mektić and Peya with the score 4:5, to take the next two games and the match.
Mektić and Peya remain at one joint title, won earlier this year in Marrakech. This was their third loss in a final. Apart from the title in Marrakech, Mektić has another two titles, both won last year with American Brian Baker.
