Following the May 18th local elections in Croatia, which were followed in some ridings with a second round run-off poll on June 1st, the Vukovar City Assembly was unable to constitute it inaugural session over an inability to form a majority.

The Vukovar City Assembly was constituted on Thursday in its second attempt. This comes after a deal was reached between the Croatian Sovereignists and the HDZ. The majority in the 19 seat assembly is comprised of five councilors from Mayor Marijan Pavliček's Sovereignists, three HDZ councilors and one each from the DOMiNO Party and the HNS. The HDZ's Goran Bendra was elected assembly president: "It is in all of our interest that all of the programs and projects that have been initiated be continued, and that in cooperation with the Croatian Government and Vukovar-Srijem County we continue to initiate new projects."

For his part newly elected mayor Marijan Pavliček said that he is glad that the city assembly can now move on with the work that lies ahead: "I am happy that we can finally begin to take new concrete steps in the city's further development, and that we won't potentially lose a couple of months, a couple of million of euros and a couple of very important projects to a crisis in governance. For that I truly thank them, and I believe that we will have a high level of cooperation on the basis of the principles of our program."
