The Croatian Parliament is temporarily relocating due to a major two-to-three-year renovation of the historic Sabor building, damaged in the 2020 earthquake.
Lawmakers will convene at the Petar Zrinski military barracks on the west side of the capital. This is a historic decision, according to Speaker Gordan Jandroković, who also said the temporary location was the most cost-effective and met all the requirements.
"There won't be any rental costs like there you’d be if we were moving to a location that was not state-owned. We will have to spend some money on minor renovations and adaptations of some spaces that are crucial to the work of parliament. I expect the members of the next parliament to be ready to move in on day one," said Jandroković.
The Petar Zrinski barracks are also home to the Franjo Tuđman Military Academy. Jandroković showed a photo of the building, underscoring that it was a modern, relatively new building that had a large hall that could accommodate the entire chamber for plenary sessions.
“We have satisfactory conditions and security, there is also a restaurant, parking, and it seems to me that we have everything necessary for the Parliament to do its work well,” he said.
Jandroković's press conference came after RTL news reported on the move Tuesday evening before a meeting of the Parliament’s leadership which was supposed to formalize the decision on Thursday.
