In parliament on Wednesday the parliamentary majority appointed Judge Ivan Turudić to a four year term as the new Chief State Prosecutor. Once again the opposition criticized Turudić's appointment, given recent media reports that he was in contact with convicted football boss Zdravko Mamić while he was under investigation, as well as with former HDZ state secretary Josipa Pleslić, formerly Rimac, who is under investigation for corruption.

Ahead of Wednesday’s vote opposition MPs from both sides of the political spectrum made a last ditch attempt to warn the HDZ-led majority of the danger of appointing someone with a long history of contact with criminal elements in Croatian society. SDP leader Peđa Grbin: “You're days are numbered, and in fear and panic of what awaits you. When all of your crimes, which the public, the police and the state prosecutor's office, have been unaware of up until now, when the light of day begins to shine on all of those crimes, you want to provide yourselves some security by ensuring that your boy is at the head of the chief state prosecutor's office.”

“With this kind of government, you get this kind of state attorney. With this kind of government, you get this kind of Constitutional Court. I am convinced that some those members of the HDZ who have even a trace of moral sense, are not happy that they have to vote for Turudić today,” added the president of the Croatian Sovereigntists Party, Marijan Pavliček.
