A monument to two 17th century Croatian historical figures has been unveiled in Austria.

Busts of Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan were officially unveiled on Saturday in Wiener Neustadt, Austria.

The two Croatian nobles were imprisoned and executed for trying to stage a revolt against the Habsburgs. Petar Zrinski and Fran Krsto Frankopan are regarded as heroes who fought for justice and freedom for the Croatian people. The monument stands in the place where they were beheaded in 1671. The monument was erected three years ago by the Zrinski Guard Čakovec and the Croatian Cultural Society in Burgenland. It was supposed to be unveiled last year, on the 350th anniversary of their deaths but the ceremony was canceled because of Austria’s strict Covid-19 rules.

"I am so pleased this is happening. It's important that this monument stands here,” said Stanko Horvath from the Croatian Cultural Society Burgenland.
